The new rentals include 5.1 on the HD side but only stereo on the standard side. How am I supposed to abandon Blockbuster if this device that I want in my home theater does not support surround sound in the great majority of movies? This is a MAJOR oversight, what is Apple thinking?

I agree, seems 5.1 dd should be std audio for std def movies, just like a DVD, and then for HD movies one of the higher quality sound formats, most likely the HD lossy formats DD+ or DTS HD High Resolution audio, since I'm guessing the lossless Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD Master Audio take up too much bandwidth

This is because adding a DD5.1 AC3 soundtrack would then make it incompatible with iPods/iPhones that have no idea how to handle it.

Surely iTunes could have been optimized to convert the 5.1 track to stereo for iPod/iPhone compatibility.

I simply cannot justify buying this device to use on my widescren TV as it is intgended without the inclusion of surround sound. Even DirecTV was beaming down PPV with 5.1 sound 11 years ago!

I agree, it's a software issue for iTunes to manage, not a hardware issue for iPod/iPhone.

With that said, hopefully Apple can release an iTunes update to handle this by Summer 08, just in time for iPhone Rev2.....
