Steve Jobs consulting for General Motors?

A friend of mine, an engineer with the Touch team, mentioned that he heard that Steve Jobs has been contacted and asked to consult on a "new kind" of vehicle for General Motors. Something about bringing Apple innovation, styling and ingenuity to GM to make a totally new vehicle.

So... has anyone else heard of anything about this?

Frankly I think it would be a good idea. I hope that Job's health problems don't interfere. I'm sure there are some people thinking that he can work the same kind of magic for GM that he has for Apple. I wonder if selling 200-400 dollar sound toys is a little easier that constructing 15K to 30K vehicles but if people in Detroit are starting to get that they need some TRUE innovation then I am totally for this. Hopefully they have some other brilliant execs/engineers in mind in case Jobs refuses to even look at their proposal.

Your friend is probably talking about the Chevrolet Volt, GM's upcoming plug-in hybrid. The plug-in hybrid is a totally new and totally new kind of vehicle. The Volt's interior is dominated by a white instrument panel with touch controls that many liken to an iPod.

He has ideas for GM: one is that whoever decides to run it should make it so the unions can't sue. That way they wouldn't have to deal with lawsuits. They could fire and fire and re-build. They have the good designers, he said, and I remembered that when he came back to Apple, the good designers were there, they just hadn't been able to influence the final product. The heads were dinasuars, idiots. He talked about the way they were fat and pockmarked, and I said, I was sure there were other brilliant pockmarked people out there. He could turn it around, I was sure. How wondeful it was to be so sure of someone's abilities, but then to know they couldn't do it this time around.
