Steve Jobs says you can take the thing on a plane but the maximum altitude for the thing is only 10,000 feet when you fly at 30,000 feet. hmmmm. Somethings not right.
cabin pressure at 39k feet is set to around 7,000 feet via pumped compressed air, so not to worry!
If you were in an unpressurized cabin at that height, you would be gasping for air just sitting there, eek!
Actually at 10k unpressurized, you will have passed out. Air is too thin and oxygen is not plentiful.
10k feet is only 3300 metres, I've been up to 5000 metres with nothing more than coca tea to keep me going.

As someone who lives really close to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, USA. This is not true. Ask the residents of Alma @ 10,578 ft, or Leadville @ 10152ft

Also remember, there are people who climb Mt. Everest without extra oxygen.
The real question is ... what about the hardware of the iPad restricts what altitude is supported?
Notice the "you may"
I know Pogue was joking that the flight takes 11 hours,
Fair enough. It wasn't there when I quoted your post .
