IMO, whatever Gates does has little affect on how Jobs will handle things. He won't leave just because Gates is leaving. If he does leave, it will be for his own reasons.
If and when Jobs retires, he'll have a better retirement video than this:

Isn't this question like asking if the CEO of GM steps down will Ford follow? I do not believe the actions of one will provoke actions of another. If anything, this may be a good time for Apple to take advantage of the possible chaos that will be going on over at MS during the transition. Not to say that there will be chaos for sure, but there's a chance.
I know what you think but to me it seems that steve jobs always had a little "penis-envy" in regards to bill. he might think "oh now that bill is gone my prestigious enemy is gone so why don't i just quit too? i've brought apple back up again, it's time for me to care about my family now."
I agree that Jobs and Apple have always had the attitude that they had the better product but just didn't have the wide-appeal that MS has had (until recently). But if you look at Gates, he is the richest man in the world and built the most powerful and biggest software company (for a time). What else in his career is there to do? Nothing. He's come to the correct realization that there is more to life than competition and money and now is going to focus on helping people.
Gates gets a lot of flack, but not the credit for the good that he does outside of the tech community. He is a bully, but he could easily stick around and try to crush linux and Apple - but he's rightly moving on

The impression I always get from when he is interviewed, is that he thinks the complete opposite. Sure, he is in competition with MS and pokes fun at them all the time but it is not only about that. He seems to have a genuine passion for what he does and is trying to make computers and electronics better regardless of who the competition may be.
Gates has been stepping away from leadership at Microsoft for many years. Jobs hasn't signaled any intention to give up any leadership at Apple. Apple should certainly be planning for succession, but there are no signs of it.
When Jobs does go, I don't think it'll be that quickly. He's more likely to move from the CEO position to Chairman of the BOD suggesting to shareholders that he'll oversee the incoming replacement. There's a lot of Apple's market value tied into Jobs being where he is. Any transition will have to be carefully managed with an obviously groomed successor announced at least a year in advance.
