iPhone Sticky Situation

So...I bought a phone from this guy about a month ago and long story short he played me like a choir on sunday...whatever that means...but jokes aside, now I have an iphone 6s, with a bad ESN and I dont know what to do.
I read articles about how you can jailbreak a phone to unlock it and I was wondering if that might work. Any suggestions?

If you want to unlock it (assuming it's locked) then try a third party unlock service.

What you read would have applied if this were still 2010-2011. Software unlocks (which is an unlock via jailbreaking) are dead. No one does them.

Furthermore, to jailbreak you need to be on a version that is jailbreakable. If you are on iOS 9.3.5 or higher there is currently no jailbreak.

Lastly, even if you do get the device unlocked there is no guarantee that your bad ESN hasn't been shared with the other domestic carriers.

Chronic or Swift Unlocks maybe.

Yes. It could be problematic.

Once a carrier blacklists you then technically your blacklisted ESN is supposed to be shared worldwide so that the device cannot be used on any carrier.

In practice that doesn't really happen which is why a US device can be blacklisted and work internationally and vice versa.

Generally though, the carriers do share their blacklists nationally. If you're blacklisted on Sprint say, that info tends to be shared with T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon as well as the smaller carriers.

But again, that's not necessarily always the case.

I'm just pointing out that if you get this device unlocked you should not in an way be surprised if the carrier you take the device to is unwilling to activate it because the ESN ended up on THEIR blacklist.

I don't think it's something that should prevent you from trying to unlock the device and making what you can of it though.

No, you cannot bypass a blacklisted iphone with any hacks or jailbreak.
Its done on the carrier side so once that serial number connects or tries to connect to their network they do not allow service to it. It can only be enabled/disabled on the carrier system level.
You can use it outside the US since the bad imei/esn only stays within the US and not on every country in the world.
