Now my purchases are with both accounts. I see no way to combine accounts and have no idea why we were forced to create a new one when I had one for the past 5 years.

I created a new one for iCloud (because I wanted to), but kept using my original one (that I've had for years) for use in the iTunes Store.

You don't have to use the same account in both places.

Who "forced" you into creating another iTunes account? I am on iOS 5 and I still only have my original account that I have always used.

I remember when it was released, there were a lot of people complaining (me included) that they would enter their iTunes account information, but we're prompted that they had to use the iCloud ID. I would have never have associated my iCloud account with my iTunes ID if I didn't have to. It'd be fine if I could combine the two.

I use my same account I've always had.

I had a non-iOS 5 iPhone 4, and racked up quite a bit of purchases. Gave the phone to my wife and picked up an iPhone 4S and was able to go into iOS 5 with the same account no problem, and it works as my regular account, and iCloud.

Don't know if it maybe was a small subset of customers, etc, but I'm good here.

I didn't have to create a new iTunes account when I upgraded my 4 to iOS 5. Same iTunes account worked fine when I upgraded to the 4S aswell.

So why, exactly, was it a problem entering your actual original information? Get rid of your "new" iTunes account, use your new one, and you are all set. I honestly don't understand the problem here.

When I downloaded and installed iOS 5 on my iPhone, my iTunes user ID was not an email address. It prompted me to enter a valid email address to use as my new login ID. From there, I was still able to access all the music and purchased from iTunes dating back to when I initially created my account 5 or 6 years ago.

who said we were forced? You simply didn't understand how it works so you created a new one.

my wife has her own icloud account, i have my own icloud account, and we share 1 gmail for itunes purchases. We've had that gmail account for years and have all our purchases there. Quit using the new account and go back to using your old one. You only need to create a me.com email if you want email and to use it for notes. Everything else can be used on icloud with your old account info.

This is exactly what I did. That way my wife and I can still share purchases, but our contacts and calendars and stuff don't interfere with each other.

Forced? How were you forced? Thats completely absurd. I've been using the same iTunes account for years. I use the same account for iCloud and iTunes with no problems whatsoever. The problem here is that you didn't understand what you were doing when upgrading but proceeded to anyway, hence the position you are in now.

Umm so what was it if it wasn't an email address?

They used to be just usernames.
