Still no Airplay 2 on macOS 11 Big Sur unbelievable

... What? Can't you just manually set them up as a stereo pair in the MIDI settings panel like setting up any other multi-audio device?
That wasn't what I said though. For a long, long time in OS X; Maybe even since the very first version, you've been able to manually create multi-audio devices, combining several independent audio outputs into a single, user-configurable one. To the system it'd become like one device after you set it up in MIDI. I can also for example make my AudioEngine A5+ speakers and my internal MacBook Pro speakers become "one device", and keep them both independently stereo-balanced, or balance one to left and one to right or anywhere in-between

See "Create Multi-Output Device" in the menu here. I have no HomePods but I see no reason you couldn't do it with them same as any other device, AirPlay or not

And I just verified that I can combine my AirPlay Apple TV with other speakers

It stuns me as to just how many don't understand that. Or at least don't understand that beta software is often far from fully stable and functional. These people are completely out of touch with reality.
Not really. Once the proxy application is closed the aggregate device disappears and have to be set up again. So the solution requires you to have TV open on a paused video in perpetuity. Yikes.I mean yeah it's not perfect, but at least it works, right?

The problem with saying “it’s a beta” does not mean that it’s not feature complete. Very rarely are major features like AirPlay 2 left out of the first beta only to be suddenly introduced during the beta process. So NOT having it in the first beta is a pretty good indication that it won’t be included at all in release.
So, let’s follow your logic through. Do you think that macOS 11 Big Sur won’t have Airplay 2 in its final release? Would that make any sense to you?!?
While that was what was written in the article I don’t see why that would be necessary when you can attach AirPlay devices directly from the MIDI settings panel; Again, I have no Home Pod to test but it works with my AppleTV AirPlay target without a proxy app

His logic is solid, and AirPlay 2 sees no official indication to arrive in Big Sur. And has also not been present in past versions of macOS.
Major features are usually only added in the alpha stage. That said it has happened in the past that very requested features be added during the beta process
Except you can’t. There are no AirPlay targets in Audio/MIDI without the connection being open.

But you can open that connection straight from the MIDI control panel, without needing another app, by clicking the plus button and selection Connect AirPlay, right? - That works for me

Yes, but that doesn’t solve the issue of outputting to a stereo / aggregate device. That’s the same as just connecting directly to a HomePod.
I only have the one AirPlay device, Apple TV; But what happens if you connect to one HomePod in MIDI; Make aggregate device with it, then connect to the other and add it to the aggregate device?
Why does Apple not allow this still, all I wanna do is use 2 homepods as main MacBook speakers
