i'm still stuck on iOS 17 and had hopes of improvement with iOS 19/26. but nothing and now i know it won't come back. maybe i'm too stupid to provide apple vision. maybe my reality is just a different one. i'm tired of it anyway. i have already replaced so many stock apps in the last few years because apple with its compulsion to constantly change things inevitably makes everything worse. although in this case i still can't understand why the camera roll should be kept from you. i've known nothing but iOS for 20 years and will use iOS 17 for another 1-2 years and switch to android. I could replace Mac OS immediately. i feel much more comfortable in the linux world now.
as for my family, i'm not going to convert anyone to anything else. there's just no support anymore :) Apple EOS 2027, EOL2030

I's pretty easy: you are supposed to leave your stuff on Apple' servers.
Local stuff as a camera roll or file system does not feed Apple's greed and control obsession.

Exactly! It all started years ago when you suddenly had to enter the password for local backups on the iOS device for “security reasons”. As a result, we no longer have daily backups. 2-3 backups per year with luck. Ok, you can still make fully automatic backups to the cloud, which is totally secure, super fast and above all reliable. It's enough to make you cry

The Photos app works locally if you don’t sync with iCloud.

What's your issue exactly? You can sort your library by recent images, which mimics the old camera roll behavior.
no its not! not on io18 and not on ios26. it's just a chronological collection mixed with synced and taken photos/videos

exactly! and iOS makes no difference whether the photos are synced or come from the camera. and so everything is mixed up. i and some others just want access to the photos taken by the camera. sure it goes directly through the camera app but the menu is as inconvenient as square wheels

I guess that’s where users are different, my photos library is purely photos taken on my camera or my iPhone which I want in my photo library. Any other pictures that I want on my device but not in my photos library I would add to the files app instead of the photos library.

I, on the other hand, am fine with synced photos but what makes me furious is that all photos taken in messaging apps (Messenger, WhatsApp, etc) also go to the library. I don’t want pictures of my failed breakfast sent to my friends group convo for ***** and giggles, with my normal, nice photos…

You can now filter in the updated photos app to make it show only what you want to see

That’s a setting in those apps, in WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Save to Photos

Or do you mean photos you’ve taken in the app?
