I’m so on the fence with this one. The mini literally is a perfect size for on the go and it’s the same processor as the IPhone 13 this thing zips through task. I also like having the 5g instead of 4g. I have an Air but I feel it’s a little to big to lug around in addition to my laptop. I definitely see the jelly scrolling. I really hope Apple can at least release a response to the issue so we know where there head is at. My main concern is resell value. I definitely would not want to own a product with such a noticeable defect that the value is reduced dramatically out of the gate.

Here’s the skinny:

So, Apple confirms it’s how they work. So they all have it. On top of that, they are not going to pursue a fix, since that’s how they’re all supposed to operate (according to them).

Apple’s Response to Arstechnica:

Update, 9/28/2021: In response to our inquiry, Apple has told us that the "jelly scroll" issue on the sixth-generation iPad mini is normal behavior for LCD screens. Because these screens do refresh line-by-line, there is a tiny delay between when the lines at the top of the screen and lines at the bottom are refreshed. This can cause uneven scrolling issues like the ones observed on the iPad.

We maintain that this effect is noticeable on the iPad mini in a way that it is not noticeable on other 60 Hz LCD iPads we've tested, like the iPad Air 4 and the latest $329 iPad. There's also a clear dividing line down the middle of the screen in portrait mode, as observed in our testing and in the video linked below—it's not a problem at the extreme edges of the display. The upshot is that the company doesn't believe there is a hardware or software issue to "fix," and that the screen apparently is the way it is.”

Well this is good and bad. Good because if it’s all then maybe the resell value may not be too affected, but bad because it’s not changing. Lol. Man I really like this thing.

Technically, it’s not a defect. This is there on all ipads, including ipad pros where it’s least visible due to high refresh rate and bigger screen.

It’s that for some reason, Apple decided to show it in portrait mode instead of landscape mode where it would be less apparent. That is despite the fact that the mini is most favorable for portrait mode use, particularly for reading. I even wonder if they could’ve designed the screen so that it didn’t show as much in portrait mode, but I don’t know enough about screens.

So if you use the device mostly in landscape, you might be able to deal with it. It also depends on your eyes’ sensitivity. My plan is to pick it up refurbished and only keep it if I can force myself to get used to it.

As a pilot, I find the change immensely irritating.

Portrait mode in the cockpit is the primary usage and scrolling on instrument charts being "jelly-ish" to this degree is an absolute deal breaker.

It's sort of amazing that they advertised this new pad with actual imagery of pilots and acknowledgement of that being a major use case of the Mini line.....

I’m on the fence about wether to buy it or not. It’s an upgrade from the iPad mini 5.

I can't recall - have you seen one in person?

I took my Mini5 into Best Buy yesterday to compare and the jelly is really annoying and noticeable to me.

My Mini5 should have jelly in landscape, but I've never noticed it (the area it happens over is much larger in that orientation and seems harder for my eyes to track/notice).

It was just clear. as. day. to me on the Mini6 in portrait and one of those things I knew I'd never be able to "not see". It's very subjective.

In terms of the rest of it -- nice case change - but the quality of the screen and time with the Mini6 in store really left me thinking "what's the point of upgrading"?

Nothing I do with my Mini is overtaxing the A12 (at all) -- they didn't bump the RAM up enough for me to get excited for a longer term ownership side of things -- the base storage stayed the same but the prices went up 25% -- it all just left me thinking -- "Why do this?" -- I couldn't really come up with a good reason.

For how I use my Mini, it's a lateral move mostly and just not worth the financial outlay (for me).

Maybe if you're big into the Pencil 2?
(for that though, I'd really prefer a ProMotion screen)

I’ve seen one in person but I haven’t seen it side by side with my mini 5. That’s what I need to see. Like you I’m not really seeing the justification for the upgrade from a financial point of view.

If jelly scroll isn't an issue for you...

I could see an argument of just staying on the newest model and getting the most trade-in money, etc

For me it was more complicated because I don't use USB-C on anything else yet and have lighting all over the house (so this would be another drawback to the Mini6 for now).

For my usages I literally stood there in Best Buy trying to think of "what was better about the Mini6 that I would notice or care about" -- I guess the cameras? Better FaceTime is always nice - same with back camera I suppose?

When I have to struggle that hard to find a reason to do it -- it generally tells me "don't".

I’m neutral on USB-C. I won’t use any of the additional features that it allows. I have an iPad Pro 11 and a MacBook with USB-C. However I have an iPhone so still using lightning for that and I have tons of lightning chargers around the house.
