Its mid Nov 2025. I have been running OS X Mountain Lion since release in 2012 as my main OS every single day for hours a day. I also use Lion, Snow Leopard, Leopard, and Tiger being the oldest on some other older MacBook Pros/Mac Pro's I have periodically a few times a week- but 10.8 is my main go to.
I outright refuse to ever use anything past Mountain Lion. I just simply cannot and will not. Once they changed the OS name's to horrible locations doing away with the legendary Big Cats, removed aqua UI, had garbage stock wallpapers (mind you the Big Cats had THE BEST wallpapers I have ever seen in my life), and the main major point- Made Mac OS FREE like its some now cheap and unimpressive upgrade; I knew Mac OS was played out & finished. Its all been downhill after 10.8 to me....
Luckily; I can still effortlessly do everything I need to do still on Mountain Lion just obviously have to stick to older versions of applications. Youtube works perfectly on Chromium, all websites load with no real issues, I can login to every website I want to go on, there is no issues or weird quirks. Sometimes you have to do small workarounds but its nothing major. I have a superdrive in my 2012 macbook pro and I actually have an Ethernet port. Life is good. I run VirusBarrier and pay for a subscription. I have the Little Snitch monitor on too.
Snow Leopard has issues- Youtube wont run at all; TenSixTube is the only way to make it somewhat workable its just no where near as fluid as YT in a browser, and I cant login to ebay or other big websites for some reason so that OS is out of the question asides from visits here and their for fun from time to time.
I always hear people chat about how Mountain Lion is unsupported and has security vulnerabilities. Well I have never experienced anything negative in 13 years of daily use. As long as you implement some protocols I believe you will be fine. No one is wasting time targeting a micro fraction of a user base on an old OS. That alone makes you safe in a sense. I will continue to use 10.8 for years probably decades to come. Mac OS wont ever come back to its greater glory anytime soon I know that's a fact- after all Steve is gone. Liquid Glass is no where near as nice as Aqua UI and the app icons still look boring and basic. The "make all the app icons clear or one colour" in Tahoe is so ridiculous you can barely tell them apart. Like who is actually using that. I just hope Mountain Lion will still run as good as it does right now and if any issues arises smart tech people will create workarounds. Right now 10.8 is in a really good place and I just pray it won't change for the worse anytime soon.
May the Big Cat Operating Systems Live on! I would love to hear if there is any die hard loyal users like me still around and would love to hear what steps you take to make the OS more secure/usable.
