Still seeing evidence of jailbreaking

Hi Friends!
I need some help!! A few months ago I finally decided to unjailbreak my iPhone 3G. After a couple of months, I decided to unjailbreak it. I followed the instructions for going into DFU mode and restoring. However, I still see evidence from my previous jailbreak. When I was jailbroken, I used a program to change my carrier's name to my name. After unjailbreaking, my name still shows there. It didn't switch back to AT&T. Now I'm wondering what other evidence was left behind. How do I get my carrier's name to show again so that I don't have any problems if I need to return my iPhone??? What is the correct procedure.
Any help is greatly appreciated!!

After DFU restore to official firmware, do not restore from backup, but set up your iPhone as new.

The remnants you see is because you restored from backup.
 
Can you give me exact instructions on how to do this so I don't have further problems. I want to make sure I do it correctly and not miss anything!! Thanks for your help!!
 
So this means that I will lose all contacts, calendars, email, SMS, photos, music, apps, etc? How do I get those back without hassle?

Yes. But all those data is still inside your iTunes. You can restore them after u get the new phone from Apple.

By setting up your iPhone as new, yes, you would lose everything including app data such as saved games and such.
But your contacts, calendars, photos, music and apps can be re-synced (because you do have all those on your computer, right?)

You asked how to make sure to eliminate all jailbreak remnants... and I gave you the answer. It's up to you to weigh up the inconveniences!

I just didn't know that after I set up at new phone if when I opened iTunes and selected to sync photos, music, etc. if it would automatically pick them up.

Some things carry over regardless of how many times you restore, SBSettings' Battery % is one of those things. You will need to Jailbreak and uninstall all those mods before officially restoring your phone.
 
So I will have to jailbreak again and then unjailbreak to get everything erased completely? Now I'm really confused. I have to uninstall stuff while still jailbroke?

Since the restore won't do it, whatever you used to make the mod, MIM for example, has to be used to remove the mod. So Jailbreak and install MIM; use MIM to turn off that Mod; and restore the phone.

I do not believe this is true.

I'm pretty sure setting up as a NEW phone will leave it totally clean. I actually just did this and when browse my home folder I see none of the previously jailbroken files in place nor do I see any of my manual Springboard modifications.

  • If you restore from BACKUP it WILL restore some of your mods that are done to your home directory.
  • If you set up as a NEW phone it will NOT restore your mods. :D

Will I be able to get my apps, music and pics, etc. back? They are in iTunes now. Also on the computer I'll be restoring from.
Do I back up the phone?

If they are in iTunes then everything will sync. :D

If you set up anything only on your phone, like Google Sync or MS Exchange server that's NOT on your computer, you will have to do that again.

Contacts, Calendars, Songs, Movies, Pics, Apps and all will sync just fine. :)
 
you can upload an ATT ipcc carrier file that will overwrite whatever you had as a custom operator name

I'm not surprised!
Why some peeps jump in and insist on twisting things to confuse the matter is beyond me.
DFU restore + set up as new (not restore from backup) will remove all trace, as I said before. Then you re-sync your stuff. And create a fresh new backup.
 
dZp speaks the truth. DFU restore + set up as new iPhone will leave no trace of jailbreak or unlock. You will have nothing on your phone that wouldn't have been on a new iPhone. Then sync with iTunes and you will restore your apps, media, contacts, etc.

I can 100% confirm that the SBSettings Battery % carries over on 2G and 3G phones.

In fact when I upgraded my spare 2G to 3.1 I installed the % on 3.01, before restoring and upgrading just so I would have it with 3.1.

I'm going to check to see if it also happens with a DFU Restore.

No !!

After the restore completes, you just sync back all your stuff.

Those times I have had to restore, I choose set up as new phone, nothing carried over, not logos, not batt %, not a single thing.

Did you set up as a "New Phone" or did you "Restore from a Backup". See there is a difference. Since you "restoring and upgrading" I'm going to assume your restored from a backup, which we have agreed and said THAT will preserve the % indicator or whatever carrier logo you change.

I'm 110% sure it does not carrier over because I just had to install SBSettings again once I jailbroke my 3.1 so I could get it back.

Also, you can just Sync your phone again AFTER setting it up as a New Phone to get all your Music, Pics, Apps, Calendar, Contacts, etc. back.

I restored, upgraded from 3.01 to 3.1, and set up as a new device and the SBSettings' battery % DID remain on my 2G phone.

I have not tried a DFU restore.
