I know early on there was some reports from people using the SDK that you could place six icons on the iPad dock? I'm concerned though that we've never seen any "official" photos of this happening. Has anyone heard if this feature is indeed a real feature. I think the dock looks pretty funny with just four icons on it. My hope was to setup the six apps I use the most on the dock and then move all the remaining apps to screen 2, leaving a completely empty home screen.

I never heard that, but it sounds cool. I seriously doubt Apple would sacrifice the function of a 6 icon dock in such an ugly way.

I did see a video where someone rotated the iPad and the dock added a 5th icon. I have no idea where that icon came from though...

I also wish there was a way to attach the dock to whatever side you wanted. I want the dock to stay on the side with the home button, but the icons rotate.

Recent article from Mac magazine I think it was... talked about they were at the keynote and had time to mess with the iPad. Clearly it could be their opinion, or speculation but they did state it in a manner that the iPad would have 6 icons on the dock.

I'll see if I can locate the source online, was reading it at a book store waiting for someone.

Maybe the dock does support 6 applications, but Apple felt it looked better to just have 4 in there for the product images.

I hope it ships with an option to change the "grid size" of the home screen to six across like the dock. It's so silly to have all that free space. Ship it with four across, fine Apple. But at least give us the option!

I'm hoping for the same thing, but I honestly don't think thats going to happen, I'm still waiting for the day I can set a customize ring tone for my text messages. Apple is not big on the idea of options.

+1

Even on my iPhone I'd love to squeeze 5 into the dock (no I'm not going to JB my phone again).

It's purely a marketing decision, it would look like there were less apps on the main page of all the product shots. I know I did wonder why no one tried to move an icon into the dock at the live hands on videos - that would have been one of my first questions/tests.

HHM:apple:

You know, I hadn't even thought about that. I was just reading this month's MacWorld and it's review says they had seen the six icons in the dock during their test. It does seem kind of silly that you can put six icons in the dock but only four in a row on the home screen though. No big deal though I guess. Now I'm trying to decide what six icons I will put in the dock. I have entirely too much time on my hands, that is obvious (but hey, I'm retired).

You know, you've heard the term slow as Christmas; I think the new term needs to be slow as April 3rd :).

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

I still think the whole home screen is a joke. Was johny ive off sick the day it was designed!!!
Totally lacks design. Looks as if no thought what so ever was put in to it. Very un apple like!

While I don't think it's horrible, I've come up with the idea that Apple were originally planning to release OS 4.0 alongside the iPad, but there were problems making it delayed, so Steve just said put 3.2 on there at launch and give them 4.0 a few months later. He's already said 4.0 is a huge update, so I'm really excited to see it. I think there will be a lot of new additions.

I hope so!;)

Do you recall where/how he said 4.0 would be huge? Not doubting, just would love to hear/read the specific quotes.

Hmm, that's a really interesting idea. It'd sorta be like your Mac's desktop. You have your dock and then an empty home screen if you're a minimalist, or a couple of files or folders you frequently access. On your iPad, that'd probably be website shortcuts and the built-in apps like Mail, Weather, iBooks, etc. I think 6 covers most of my frequently accessed apps. Here's my list:

Mail
Safari
Meebo
Photos
Video
And for the 6th app, whatever comes out for the iPad that I really like, heh

Since I already have an iPod Touch, and don't really like the form factor of the iPad for music listening, I don't think I'll be using the iPod app much. I'm curious to hear how you'll listen to your iPad. Headphones from your iPad's bag?

iPhone OS 4.0 sounds really great as well. If it is a huge improvement to the (already quite usable) iPhone OS on the iPad, it'll be even more of a reason for me to buy it; especially if features like Expose are implemented.

Like you, I really don't see myself using the iPod function that much on the iPad. I keep all the songs I listen to most often on my iPhone and since I carry it with me all the time, I'll just continue to use it for my iPod. I will watch Videos on the iPad a lot. So it will be on my dock.

My dock programs -

Safari
Mail
Calendar
iBooks
Video
PocketBible

Everything else will be on screen 2.
