i was uneasy posting this in the Photo of the Day thread, as it’s not a still photo. But it STARTED with still photos!

Ten years ago my daughter and I went on a driving trip from Palm Springs to our home in the Twin Cities area, and we packed in the sights. One of the highlights was Arches National Park.

We got into Moab in the late afternoon and decided we’d get up very early and watch the sunrise in the park (she was a preteen—what a trooper!). We did a quick scouting trip and picked out a location. The next morning we got up at 4 (trooper!) and drove into the park to the Courthouse Towers, and I got several shots of the Tower of Babel rock formation catching the rising sunlight. I took my best ones, added some iMovie transitions, and got this result, of which I’m really proud!

(I had to transform it into an animated GIF and compress it some to post here, I hope it translates well!)

My actual stills go on to a brighter finish...but the GIF maker I found required a limit its length. You get what you pay for.

(apologies for the annoying transition when it loops...I didn't know how to make it a "start over when I click it" deal without injecting code, and that just wouldn't be responsible use of the forum. In fact I hope this image itself is a responsible use of the forum as well.)

The Courthouse Towers is this big flat space, bracketed by two formations: the Tower of Babel and The Organ. When we got here that morning it was deserted, absolutely silent, as the sun rose.

Here is The Organ in the same sunrise; it stands opposite the Tower of Babel across a wide flat space I’d guess about 500 meters across:
