STOLEN 24"iMAC Serial Number

Hello fellow Apple users in the UK

Today I was scammed through eBay & PayPal to handing over the 24" iMac I had for sale

The funds were then backed out/revered out of PayPal and as the item was "collect in person" I'm not covered through PayPal (which I admit I didnt know) so Im stiffed - They also conned an elderly couple out of a TV in the same way later this evening

in case you are offered one with this serial number, its nicked...

Report it to the police. Posting it here is not going to do much.

I'm pretty sure you should still report it to the police (did you get their car's registration number?), paypal and eBay. Someone must be able to get you your money or computer back.

For future reference, if doing a pick up in person deal, I would always insist cash on collection. Also, notify Apple. If they get it in for repair they may be able to hold it or notify you.

Sorry to hear about his mate, I really do feel for you

I take it that you've already reported it to the police? If not then I suggest that you do so ASAP, even if there is only a remote possibility that you'll get your iMac back, you never know it might pop up somewhere and at least if you've reported it they'll be able to get in touch with you.

Have eBay/PayPal been of any assistance at all?

Yeah already exhausted all those avenues and reported to the police.

bottom line is Im screwed, cant even claim on house insurance as Ive just read that my policy doesnt cover possessions lost by "theft by deception"

It is an interesting loophole, that I never knew about...well two...
1 Not being covered by PayPal for collection in person
2 that it was possible to "reverse" a paypal payment

Ive been too complacent over the years using eBay/PayPal it seems

Hope others that didnt know at least now do

Must admit I never thought to find out in the 8 yrs or so Ive been ebaying

All reported to the Police, but in the grand scheme of things...

So I'm stuffed

I know what you're saying, in the grand scheme of things the police aren't about to throw all of their resources at finding your iMac and/or the [insert] responsible, but you may find that at some point in the near or distant future that you get a call informing you that it's been recovered, trust me

sorry mate really sorry ,but i cant give much hope in the chance of finding the iMac again , not in the uk where its all to easy to change your name daily if you wish with a bit criminal energy , really sorry ..all i needed to open a bank account had been 3 utility bills as my passport was still in the german embassy ..htey said its alright bring it later and i got my account , ok i showed them my passport a couple weeks later

the serial number is possibly changed already as its easy to do with the right software (from apple )as its stored in nvram and new boards usually come without serial to apple so if under apple care they can give you the old number back when they change the logicboard
