Stolen iPhone X - can the thieves do anything with it?

Hi all,

Long time lurker here, seeking some advice/reassurance pls.

My iPhone X on iOS 14, with ‘find my’ enabled was snatched from me today - feel so stupid as I took such good care of it

As soon as I could, I logged into iCloud and saw the last location was where it was stolen. So presumably it was turned off.

I activated lost mode, and the erase function.

So, I know if it accesses WiFi/data whilst my Apple ID is logged in, it’ll effectively be bricked.

But I’m wondering, if it’s not turned on or even if they do and it’s essentially bricked, is it possible to unbrick? I see a post on here suggesting ‘no’ unless they have specialist equipment. But a Google suggests software can be used to bypass Activation Lock.

I don’t want to name any software here but I’m wondering, are they real/a scam?

I guess I’m looking for some reassurance that although gone, at least they won’t be able to do anything with it, other than sell for parts.

I’d really appreciate any thoughts - even if you think they *can*do something with it.

You should be safe, unless you used an easily guessed PIN. Do make a police report and notify your carrier right away so your SIM won’t be used nefariously.

Thank you - I’m relieved to say my PIN is not easily guessed and I’ve notified the police with the IMEI and my network.

As I say, so long as they can’t do much with it, I’ll feel better...ish! 🙂

I agree with Ian. In the future, I suggest PIN locking your SIM, so that if your phone is lost or stolen, whoever has it won’t be able to use your data plan.

If they’re experienced, they can render it inoperative and pay Apple $549 for an out of warranty replacement. But realistically they will sell for parts.

I guess the websites offering to work around Activation Lock must be a scam then - certainly one or two them were posting fake Revoo reviews.

unless someone thinks they’re real, I’m relieved 🙂
