Stolen Iphone

Stolen iphone 12 Pro max. NYC. Even when wiped, and carrier, banks, notified the thieves can still access accounts via WIFI. WTF!
This is first time have had a phone stolen and getting ripped off in a major way.
Are there security companies, apps, whatever that maximize the protection to avoid of minimize this major hassle. Had facial recognition on. Phone was on a table in a club (big mistake but young owner of phone...and not savvy to security risks in NYC as a visitor). Any suggestions appreciated.

Change all your passwords. Dig through the settings on each account for all the accounts to bump all logged in devices. Change security question answers and 2FA methods. Verify recovery methods are valid and any billing or address information is correct.

I'd start with doing this to iCloud, password managers and email addresses. Then work your way out to anything financial, work or shopping related. Then social media, gaming and other miscellaneous accounts.

Thank you so much for this info. What a mess. We have already lost (but are trying to recover $$$ & purchases). AMEX is helping but BoA has been pretty incompetent so far. Left an account open for 20 hrs after we discussed and informed them on phone. Lost another amount to Zelle. The thief did something to prevent our access into Icloud and apple locked it for 24 hrs. Uggg. Do companies like LifeLock Aura or ? prevent or deter this if a phone is stolen/lost?

No, those companies don’t really help prevent. More of an insurance when it does happen. As you are paying a premium for their assistance in correcting everything. How good they are at helping, I couldn’t say.

If you want to prevent it better.
- Make your password manager require a password or at least a separate pin. No, autounlocking with phone.
- use a more complex passcode to unlock your phone. When Face ID isn’t working. Someone may have been watching you and saw you enter your PIN at some point.
- don’t let financial apps save your login or stay logged in.
- Set the phone to auto wipe after multiple incorrect pins.
- use a password manager to auto generate random passwords.
- never honestly answer security questions. Save fake answers in the notes field.
