Stolen Mac

Dammit just a few months before purchasing my iMac and I got my eMac stolen (have to use my laptop for now).

I want to claim it on insurance but as most will know the eMac was only available through education, where I got a friend of the family who is a lecturer to purchase it. Will this cause problems with insurance? The invoice may say his name but does the first-time registering through Apple.com (which is under my name and address) and that I hold the invoice play through this?

I think that would depend on your insurance company. I'd say it's a good thing that it's registered under your name from the get-go, but the only thing you can do is really call your insurance company and see what they say. Explain the whole situation to them up-front. Say you needed him to buy it for you, but it's yours.

I agree. Lying to the insurance company is a sure way to get in a lot of trouble.. namely insurance fraud, even though it was yours and you purchased it. Be honest, tell them everything up front.

Thanks for the help, but yes there is no way to commit insurance fraud, the truth is on the invoice! About how they stole it, well we were out for the Easter break and we got a call that our house was burgled from our next-door neighbor, who interrupted them before they stole anything from the other rooms. Sadly, they used a stolen vehicle for their grab.

EDIT: I should add that an eMac wouldn't be so hard to steal as much as a big hulking Sony Trinitron which my uncle got nabbed a while back!

Sorry to hear about the robbery, it's rediculous that people actually do things like that. Just be honest with the company, and I'm sure it will work out.

Weird! Last night I had a dream that my eMac got stolen.

Technically what happened was that he bought it and then sold it to you. You're still the owner and even if the invoice has your friend's name on it, a signed/notorized letter (if required) would do the trick. Just because you were not a first purchaser, doesn't mean you aren't the owner. Otherwise, going on that logic, youd wouldn't be able to insure used vehicles.

At any rate, if it is a replacement cost insurance policy, the insurance will pay for the most-similar new machine to replace this - which means a 17" iMac Core Duo (all in one, 17", lowest model). You'll want a quote from your local Apple dealer stating the price and that this is the closest new model available.

I think it'll be fine. I'll just get my mate to sign a letter that it was purchased for me and that all ownership falls under my name, and that it was understood by both parties that it was bought as a gift. But yes, thanks for all the quick replies and I'm sure this will get resolved quickly.
