This is driving me absolutely to distraction.
I will be watching a video on my iMac with my AirPods in. My iPhone rings and the source switches automatically to the iPhone. It only does this AFTER I answer the call (so I've taken the buds out, answered the iPhone only to find no sound so have to switch output or put buds back in ears...)
Afterwards, after monopolizing the output, they then do not auto-switch back to the iMac. I have to manually reconnect them.
Short version - I don't want them switching sources unless I manually do so. Period.

I've searched and seem to be able to find a lot of people experiencing similar frustration yet no-one has answers that actually work.

I’ve disabled this on my phone as well for this exact reason. They have to be connected to your phone, then go to the Bluetooth settings and hit the “i “ next to AirPods. If you scroll down you will find an auto connection option. Change to “only when connected to last” (or something close to that) and you should be good.
