Hi all.

With the latest Catalina public beta installed whenever I restart my Mac it loads up apps on boot (if I closed them all down before rebooting).

The option to 'reopen windows when logging back in' is switched off when I select restart so it must be a different setting somewhere.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Many thanks.

M.

Does anyone know how to stop this from happening?

I've just booted in Catalina and VLC, Maps and Safari all opened on boot.

How do I stop them?

Not sure it's this, but... The default action for Safari is to open a new window on launch, so if Safari is running but with no windows open and you restart the Mac, Safari will be running and you'll likely get a new window. (There are four options in Safari's preferences > General tab, and they all open a window.) The same may go for Maps and VLC.

So, if you quit Safari and restart the Mac, does Safari launch when you log back in? I'd guess, no.

i'd try checking that box ("re open apps"), the reboot. what happens? probably apps open. then try unchecking it, reboot again...

Apps don’t always open when macOS boots. And it’ll be different apps when it does boot (usually the last apps used before the reboot).

The option to reopen apps when the computer is restarted is turned off.

look in the right-click settings when the given application is present in the Dock and see if there's a checkmark for Open at Login. Check your Home Library folder for the LaunchAgents folder and see if anythings lurks in there. There's a chance that the trial version of either CleanMyMac3 or their newer version can help you decipher this. Uninstall said app when done.

Try
Wait 10-15 seconds between closing the last app and closing your Mac. It seems Catalina takes a while to clear the entries in ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.loginwindow
