Im having a small issues with the iPhones mail program.

I have 3 emails setup...(bellsouth, Hotmail, Gmail)

I have it setup so that it should update manually in settings/mail.

However, at any given time, my phone will download new messages to my phone. I cant seem to figure out why...

I want to be able to download my messages manually, when i choose. Sometimes i just want to download email from 1 account, not all 3.

Any thoughts?

Many thanks from a new and excited iPhone owner :apple::apple::apple:

Because you have push on? Also, mail like Yahoo auto pushes, so there's no way to stop it. That could be the case for gmail and bellsouth. Hotmail shouldn't since it doesn't push auto, AFAIK.

aggie just asked the same questions i was going to. Does it do it for just one account or all of them?

Go into Settings - Mail, Contacts, Calendars - Fetch New Data
Turn off Push, set Fetch to Manual.
Then go into Advanced and set each account to Manual.

That "should" kill any automatic updating.

He already has fetch turned to manual, from how I interpreted his OP. And the advanced tab doesn't lead to anything to set to manual, so don't know where you're getting that at (at least for Yahoo and Hotmail, which I have).

Ohh, i think i just found that...thanks

also, how does it update if i need to do it manually?

Just open up the inbox? or is there something i need to do?

Ive gone into mail settings and disabled push and set fetch to manual.

However, i do not see any settings in ADVANCED for each account that says manual.

I see Delete messages and Incoming Settings...

I am using 3 accounts, mail is going to ALL of them.

The Advanced button is at the bottom of the Fetch New Data screen. it allows you to drill into each account and change the way the data is received.

I've discovered that the Fetch settings on the Fetch New Data screen can be overridden via the advanced settings.

I tried to do exactly what the OP did and found that killing them in the advanced screen actually worked... for me anyway.

Jeez, I was on the wrong screen. I was going to the advanced tab in the accounts part. I'd been on that screen before and thought manually was the end of the page!!!

same, which is why i changed my 2nd post.

So how do you get mail manually? just open the inbox?

Me too, but I kept digging.

The Mail app will check for new mail as soon as you open the app though. There is no way to override this.

Gmail Calendar gives you all three options.

GMail only gives you the option of Fetch or Manual.

Trust me, I saw that once I figured out what you were saying. As far as checking when it opens, that is what you'd want it to do, otherwise what would be the purpose of manual.

well, even with all the settings off, this is still happening and i still dont know why.

I want to be able to keep my email settings, but dont want to download email unless i open up my in-boxes.
