When i want to leave my PB running overnight, what do i have to do?

At the moment, when i shut the lid down the HD's stop spinnning and it basically just goes into sleep/suspend mode... how can i leave it so when i shut the lid it is still running, and the screen is off?

A couple of things:

You can set the screen to turn off in the Energy Saver System Preference after a certain time.

You can manually dim the screen with the right F-key and it's good as off.

you can plug in a mouse to the USB port after you close the lid i think, and it will remain awake. but i think it does sleep for a few seconds after you close the lid and before you plug the mouse in.

i'm not exactly sure of how to get it to stay 'awake' and close the lid without ever sleeping.

you could try having a look at Appls's KnowlegeBase though.

I missed the part about closing the lid... I think this will work, but I've heard there are issues about heat dissipation through the keyboard, which won't work if the lid is closed on it. Is there a reason you can't leave the lid open overnight?

closed lid operation is a feature of PBs. so there should be no issue with heat. the only caveat is that you need an external monitor plugged in.

here's what you can do.

1) use the AC adapter to plug in the PB (otherwise, you won't be able to wake it with the lid closed)
2) plug in usb mouse/kb
3) attach external monitor (TV is fine too)
4) close the lid, let the machine sleep
5) wake it up by clicking the mouse or pushing a key
6) change the energy saver setting so it won't sleep

this is the best you can do. as far as i know, there's no other way to close the lid and keep it awake.

When I need it to keep running overnight I just don't close the lid. I have the screen set to sleep after something like 30 minutes, and the system set to never sleep while open.
