Have a strange issue and am wondering if there is some sort of file compression setting or something like that I am missing.

I have a 2013 rMBP with a 256GB SSD. Capacity is listed as 250.14GB with 174.93GB available (75.21GB used). However, when I bring up my home folder it shows 113.82GB used. This is also not the only user account on this machine.

Attaching a screen shot below. Any ideas what could be going on here?

Did some more looking around and when I go into the disk utility and look at the info tab on my SSD, it reads normal (see attached).

So what could cause that to read a different number than what you get from the Get Info selection in Finder?

Probably Time Machine's locally stored backups.

Note: You may notice a difference in available space statistics between Disk Utility, Finder, and Get Info inspectors. Those differences are expected and can be safely ignored. The Finder displays the available space on the disk without accounting for the local snapshots, because local snapshots will surrender their disk space if needed.

Good call. Had no idea that the amount stored in the local copy was suppressed like that from the Get Info. Kind of an odd feature.

Thanks for the point in the right direction.

If you feel that you don't want local backups to occur, you can disable it.

Code:
sudo tmutil disablelocal

Chameleon SSD app also allows you to disable local backups in a GUI.

Try disk repair from the disk utility in the recovery drive.

Bear in mind most of the tools do not report time machine local backup space because it should be considered as "free".

If you are running low on space, OS X will automatically start removing time machine local backups.

So really theres no point turning them off, and they may well save your ass when you get a corrupted, deleted or over-written file you need to get back between regular time machine backups.

And before everybody replies "oh i don't do that, i'm careful!" - no one PLANS to deliberately screw up their stuff :D
