when I open 'about mac' to look at the storage of my hard drive it says, 42.92 GB free of 49.25 GB but it shows the space all purple from beginning to end of the graph . Can someone please help or tell me the reason for this please ?

Run this command in Terminal and wait while the Spotlight index is reindexed and it will fix that.

You will be prompted for your password.

Code:
sudo mdutil -E /

Great Thanks. I don't know why it happened? but oh well as long as O can fix it. Thanks again

When that Spotlight index gets corrupted it makes that graphic all off. This used to happen with older OS X versions, and now the problem is back for some reason in Yosemite again.

It hasn't done the trick as I thought and I pute that code in a few times repeatedly, never mind it may go away eventually lol

You have to wait for the reindex to fully complete before it will fix that storage info. Just wait until it is done. If you have a large drive, it can take an hour or so.
