If doing BTO for in-store pickup, can you still do in-store trade-in? Do you pay at ordering or at pickup? I'd like to trade in my 2019 16" MBP. I can't be without my laptop for three weeks or whatever, so I'd do an in-store trade-in. However, if you have to pay at ordering, how does that work? I pay the whole thing, pick up and trade in, and then have $1200 in Apple credit? I don't want to do that...

The trade-in process, particularly for Macs, varies quite a bit per country. But AFAIK the one universal part of the process is that you can only trade in your device for a gift card. So I don't think your ideal scenario would be possible

If you want to trade in you're going to get a gift card at the time of the trade-in so you'd need to trade-in first and THEN purchase your new device if you wanted to use the trade-in value towards it.

From experience, you have to attach the trade-in to the purchase of the new BTO and the trade-in value will be credited back to the card of purchase. If you don’t attach to the purchase, you will get an Apple gift card.
