iPhone 14 Pro Max Store Pickup New iPhone, Mail Current iPhone with iPhone Upgrade Program

I selected the "pick up in store" delivery option for the iPhone Upgrade Program. I was hoping to mail the phone in, because the new phone is Christmas gift, but it seems like I have to surrender the current iPhone when I pick up the new iPhone. Is that accurate or do I have the option to mail my current iPhone in at a later date (after Christmas)?

When I was on the iUP and did the instore pick up, I never got the mail in option to turn my iphone in. I had to turn it in at the store. You may want to ask Apple about this.

I owned the iPhone 12 and was able to ship it from home after I picked up the 14 at the store.
