Just want to share a story, as I thought it could be helpful to some ppl in similar situations. I had given my mom (in her late 60s) my OG iPad Air many years ago, and it has over time become her primary "computer". She cracked the screen recently, so I was looking into what made sense for her as an upgrade.

I was thinking about the 9th gen iPad ($329), new iPad Mini ($499), or a 2020 iPad Air 4 (can get new-in-box for around $500 vs the new ones that are $599). I ended up getting her an Apple Refurb 2017 10.5 iPad Pro. There's a bunch of the 64gb base models on the US refurb site for $379 (just $50 more than a new 9th gen iPad). I pulled the trigger and my mom is ecstatic!

- Still Touch ID and Home Button (this was a big one - as much as we're all used to swiping up on our iPads / iPhones for many years, I didn't want my older mom to have to learn a new way of getting to the Home Screen)
- Similar footprint but slimmer side bezels (I forgot how cool this was when it came out, but when you're coming from the OG iPad form factor, it looks beautiful!)
- Fully laminated screen, brighter screen / TruTone, ProMotion (!!!) - HUGE difference for her! I forgot this was the first Apple device ever to have ProMotion (crazy that it came out in 2017, and we only just got it on the iPhones and MacBook Pro in 2021 :p)
- Quad-speakers (she uses this as her primary media consumption device in bed, and she said this sounds better than her TV and way better than the old iPad Air)
- 4GB ram (this was the first iPad to bump up to 4GB, from 1 and 2GB previously, huge difference in terms of leaving Safari tabs / apps open and not refresh when switching back)
- New battery / completely Apple-refurbished. I had briefly looked into buying this used, but getting a 4-5yr old battery was a concern. Getting Apple Refurb means I get a brand new battery with it plus 1 yr warranty

I used to own the 10.5 iPP (switched in 2020 to my current 2018 11" iPP that I bought new-in-box after the spec-bump "A12Z" version came out), and I have fond memories of how great a device it was.

Anyways, wanted to share as I think it's great value today especially for someone like my Mom who doesn't need power at all (purely using for e-mail / online banking / media consumption), and can benefit from all the other great things (beautiful screen w/ ProMotion that still stands up, quad-speakers, 4gb ram), at a really nice price point.

Always wondered what condition refurbs were in. Any scratches on the screen? New battery is a tremendous plus!

Technically, the first iPad to get 4GB RAM was the 2015 Pro 12.9 (2x2GB). It's just that the smaller Pro 9.7 (1x2GB) remained at 2GB same as the Air 2.

Now here's hoping her Pro 10.5 doesn't develop a white spot.

Like new condition. No scratches. I've bought a couple of certified refurbs from Apple in the past and they're just as good as new.

This was my first time buying a certified Apple Refurb from the online Apple Refurb store, but I had heard a lot of good stories on these forums about ppl happy with them. I can confirm for all intents and purposes, it looks brand new. New battery + brand new outer shell, display looked completely brand new. And all the accessories were new. Only way I could tell it wasn't new was that it came in a plain white box.

Fair enough re: ram. Point remains though, it made a big difference for her usage, as I pointed it out to her and she already commented how switching apps felt so much faster!

Yes, agreed on white spot. I still have my old 2017 10.5 iPP (gave it to my 6yr old who uses it heavily), and I've been lucky it hasn't gotten that issue. Another reason it's helpful to get the 1yr warranty from Apple vs buying it secondhand.

Lol, I go trigger happy opening tabs so even 4GB is too little RAM for me. :D

With that said, going from the A7/1GB OG Air to A10X/4GB Pro 10.5 is a huge improvement. Not just the RAM but that's a 3x speed up in single core performance and 4x speed up in multi-core plus probably even higher in terms of graphics (important for a smooth GUI).

I'm having a hard time deciding what to give my mom as upgrade to her 6-year old Pro 9.7. She prefers to have the home button but I want to give her A12Z+6GB RAM at least. I don't think 4GB will fare well for another 6 years.

They must use different boxes for different models. My refurb said iPad Pro and has the Apple logos on the ends of the box. Only difference is it says “Apple Certified Refurbished“ on the bottom of the front of the box. Either way, I’m a firm believer in these refurbs.

In the past year I've upgraded my parents to a 12.9 4th gen and 11 1st gen refurbs, great products.

Really helpful as my mom needs 512GB so it was really the only way I could afford that upgrade while getting a practically new/insurable device.

There shouldn’t be! All Apple refurbs get a brand new outer shell and battery.

I just purchased a "used" iPad Pro 10.5. To my surprise, I found out it is an official Apple refurbished with warranty till November 2022. Used that Reddit method to find out that the battery charge cycle is only 2 - so definitely new battery by Apple. Body looks flawless too so probably everything replaced.
