Strange background activity (messenger, whatsapp...)

Hello,

I have an iPhone 6 on iOS 8.4.1 and I've noticed by using the app "Battery Doctor" that some of my apps (all created by Facebook....) have a background activity.

Messenger stay alive even after many minutes closed.
If I kill it manually, its background activity ends.

My app background refresh is disabled, messenger doesn't have an access to the location service or to the mic.

I tried to restart my iPhone and then I've also noticed that Whatsapp is launched even if I didnt launch it.

Messenger is also relaunched in the background if I recieve a notification.

How can I stop that without removing those apps ?

It's well known that Facebook apps have found away around the BAR setting. Many find accessing the services via Safari to be a much better battery experience. You can just create a Home Screen shortcut to each service you want to use.

I'm not a user of the official facebook app since ios 6. I thought messenger was not touched by the issue.

I think using messenger in browser is not a good idea.

Maybe this will be useful, otherwise if you're attached to the apps you'll have to live with it.

It's not really BAR as the ability to run in the background is simply a feature built into iOS and has been around long before BAR. There is no user controlled setting for that functionality as all apps are allowed to run in the background for certain time after they have been used or potentially a notification has been received. There are restrictions in place on how long that is and usually it's just a few minutes at most. However certain apps that have VoIP functionality or music playback functionality or GPS functionality are allowed to run in the background for longer periods if not indefinitely. It seems that Facebook has been using some of those features in some of their apps to do that basically.
