In fact, it did it as I wrote the title of this thread too!

I have a problem with it often (usually) selecting the key shown underneath the key I intend to select, so I am already extra careful with the backspace button (it's right over the "submit" button for many forms).

It seems to not respond for a few seconds but then it tries to backspace rapidly, erasing much of what precedes the insertion point. Sometimes, this only amounts to a word or two but, other times, it wipes out whole sentances.

Though it may be related to the slow, "laggy," keyboard some users have reported here, this is not simply catching up on defered backspace attempts from when it stops responding. I may press it three times and then watch as it wipes out hundreds of typed characters.

I also encountered my other problem while typing this: with each character typed, the screen jumps back to the top of the page and jumps back to the insertion point. When it does it, it is not possible to see your insertion point when re-selecting a text field until you blindly type a character. It cleared up most of the way through typing this message when I extended the text field using the arrows above it (forum feature), which I only did because I could not reach the end of my message with the insertion point/magnifying lens (due to the other problem). The text typed after it cleared up and stopped jumping while typing is smaller, double-spaced, and is not as dark as the seemingly-bold (it's darker, but I never picked bold) text it created while malfunctioning.

I had this problem once as well. Glad to hear that it's most likely a software issue and not a touch screen problem...

I'm relieved to see that it's not just me. :D BTW, it did it AGAIN while I typed this.

I'm having the same problem quite frequently.

May have started with 2.0 - but really noticed it after updating to 2.0.1.

Really frustrating when composing long emails and watch in horror as emails get deleted in front of your eyes.

This phone has been the best and worst phone I've ever had.

iphone 16gb (v1) OS 2.0.1

Yes!

This problem: "iPhone Backspace key gets Stuck On"

I have had this problem for quite some time. You never know when it will happen, or why.

The only thing I have discovered that will STOP it from deleting your ENTIRE message, is to type, type, type..... As fast as you can, begin typing letters.

For example, press gggggggggggggggg And then, suddenly, it seems to interrupt the backspacing.... before it has a chance to delete ALL of your hard work.

Thanks, Apple.

Perhaps this is their "official" best solution..... as this problem has existed --- like so many others --- since the very first versions of the firmware.... and is still present in the latest versions of both the Original iPhone AND the 3G models.... today!

Forget about giving us super sophisticated modern technologies.... like.... Copy & Paste..... for example.... or...... Search or Find.... If you could just fix the simple "Backspace Key Gets Stuck On" bug, that would be tremendous. Too much to ask?
