Hey All - I'm hoping someone can help me with this.

I have an Early 2009 Pro, 6GB RAM, 10.8.5.

The last month, it starts freezing under two conditions:
Just out of sleep mode (from the night before); or
Just booted-up, first thing in the morning.

I have about 3-minutes after booting/waking that it's fully functional and works like a charm, after that, it just freezes regardless if it's doing something or just sitting with a fresh desktop. I have to do a hard shutdown and reboot. After that, for the rest of the day it's all good and there are no other issues or freezing.

I've scanned the HD and it reports as good with no bad sectors. I haven't installed any new software. I have even put a new hard drive with a clean install of 10.8.1 on it. The only thing that I've put on the clean install is my contacts, email, and the driver for my Epson WF-500 (no apps, no documents (that's on another HD), no updates). It's still freezing.

It will freeze whether I have email running or not. I am at a total loss as what to do next. I love, love, love my Mac Pro and am not wanting to upgrade to a pvc pipe.

Any thoughts?

I have a memory upgrade slated for the near future.

If I haven't installed any new applications, updates, etc. why would it just start freezing now? I used to have several apps startup on login, but now I don't have any, and still the machine freezes. On this new HD, I haven't even done any OS updates, it's a clean install and that's it.

Why would the memory be suffice for a month ago, but not now? (I'm not being sarcastic, I am genuinely interested so I can learn about my Mac a little more).

Few things can try.

1) boot into the recovery partition, repair permission, then reboot to normal OSX partition and check if still freeze or not.

2) boot into safe mode and check if freeze or not

3) if you upgraded the machine with non ECC RAM, run a memory test.

4) check if there is any crash log in console.

Same thing started happening a few weeks ago. I swear Apple breaks your systems to get you to buy new ones…

Crashes to the white screen a few minutes after waking from sleep. I'm thinking it's a RAM problem, still trying to diagnose which stick so I can get a replacement from OWC.

HAPPY, HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!

I don't know if this is a possible factor or not, but when it freezes, it tends to do just as the first cpu temp hits around 100-degrees, and the second cpu temp hits about 88-90 degrees.

It seems that it only freezes when it comes from a cold (temperature) start or cold wake-up. If I leave the mac on all day, it's flawless.

100C or 100F?

If just start from a cold boot with low outside air temperature, 100F sounds make sense to me. However, if that's 100C, something is very wrong.

If it only act weird from cold boot or cold sleep, may be there was some condensation occurred, and the moisture cause the problem.

Sorry about that, yes, 100F.

If it's condensation, shouldn't the computer have started to show these problems earlier?

I'm running an Early 2009.

It's hard to tell.

If there is just a little bit condensation inside the cMP, that may make it act wired at anytime (during evaporating the water), but not necessary right at startup. And the symptom will go away once the machine is warmed up to evaporate all the moisture.

Also, the machine may have more resistance to this effect when it's new, but more sensitive to the moisture now.

From your action taken. We know that's not HDD / OS problem, since you've already try another HDD with clean install.

We know that should not be RAM capacity's problem. 6G sure is more than enough to just boot 10.8.

It only happen when the machine is fully cooled down. In normal situation, low outside air temperature is better for the computer to run. However, cold air hold less moisture, that means condensation may occur after you cMP shut down (or sleep) and fully cooled down.

Anyway, it's just my rough guess. And there is not much you can do about it, unless you want to warm (and dry) up the cMP a little bit before you switch it on, and check if the problem still exist for diagnostic purpose.

Error Report

I've been just living with the problem and doing the hard shutdowns when necessary. At this point I'm almost tempted to never turn the machine off, and just do a restart every once in a while when I know the cpu's are well warmed up and at a good temperature.

My fear is that it's not a temperature based issue, and something else completely that I'm totally missing. Here is the latest error report (from about 5 minutes ago, when I had to do another hard shutdown). I wish I knew what any of it meant.
