Strange camera issue - flickering, jumping of image

I searched for this issue in this forum but didn't find it so I'm posting it, if only for posterity and future reference for anyone who might have the same problem.

Woke up this morning to find my camera app acting all weird. When in 'picture-taking' mode instead of seeing a normal image of what the camera is pointing at, I see the image all cut up and jumping and flickering around. If I take a picture it turns out okay, at least.

I haven't dropped it or anything. Tried a restart, reset and restore and none of those did anything.

I'm planning on taking it in to the Apple Store in a couple of hours. Seems like a hardware issue to me and it's likely they'll give me a loaner and then send a replacement.

Anyway, there's a new issue for you all to be aware of.

being that yesterday my camera starting showing me a white screen with snow followed by a reboot, i'm thinking the camera's have a "timed self destruct" feature on them!

and that's that. Went to the Apple Store, met with the Genius who was surprised at the issue. Said he hadn't seen it before and showed the other Geniuses and everyone thought it was strange and funny.

Got the loaner phone and am syncing it now. Not a bad experience at all so far, except that I loved my iPhone - it was kind of sad to see it go. The beginning of "Bohemian Rhapsody" played over the Apple Store speakers as I signed for the loaner and I actually felt a little wistful.

Anyway, that's the end of that I guess. Hopefully this problem won't come up for many people.

Thanks for sharing this, as it is always good to know about issues *and* any steps for resolution (so often, it's the first without the second.) Now, te next time someone searches in the forum for this, there will be results.

Curious, did the Apple store charge you for the loaner or wave the fee?

I paid the $29 for the loaner. I thought I could probably get out of it if I acted shocked and upset by it but I just didn't have the energy at the moment.

we totally should not have to be paying for loaners when the phones are 1 month old and obviously we are beta testers. i'm the BIGGEST iphone fan and advocate there is but come on.. this is 1st gen. we didn't break the phone.. it broke itself, so we shouldn't have to pay for a loaner when chances are we will just get brand new phones from apple. it would save a lot of people a lot of troube if they just gave us new phones right at the apple store

i got out of my $29 fee.. it wasn't hard. but then i'm a girl so i just have to use my puppy dog eyes in combination with my sharp wit and amazing reasoning skills

Lucky you could get out of the $29. Too bad they charge for a loaner, I know vehicle shops that don't charge for a courtesy vehicle, and that goes through more abuse than an iPhone.

I am having the same problem. my iPhone takes wonderful pictures, but when I am taking them the screen is all cut up and jumpy. I have searched all over the internet and found not one single article or post about this problem. I was hoping that it was a software issue but apparently not.

Well, it's good to know I'm not alone, but also it's a shame it had to happen to you.

The only plus sides to this are 1) the turnaround on getting a replacement is very quick and 2) you end up with a brand new phone, so if you had any scratches on the back like I did, you can start fresh.

Also the little box it comes in is pretty nice, fwiw.

...Or you could end up with a replacement phone that has more problems.

The replacement I got yesterday will not fully charge and the usage stats don't work properly. I've done 2 restores and charged it with the wall charger for 8 hours. Still not right.

Looks like another replacement for me! Good times...
