I was with Sprint for 20 years since 1989, going back to when cell phones were connected to your car with a cord and antenna. And equally, I'm an Apple computer user for 20 years as well, my first Apple computer being a 40MB laptop.
I say this because even though I'm an Apple fan, I never really considered getting an iPhone. I heard all the nightmares about AT&T service being lousy and we Treo users boasted of our raised QWERTY keyboard as compared to iPhones impossible to use "digitized" keyboard. Soooo, I waited... and waited... and finally got the new Palm Pre on my superior priced and quality Sprint network... and everything I thought would be a plus - turned out to be a minus.
The Pre is a great phone... but impossible for a large person to use. I'm 6'4" and my thumbs are way too big for the pullout keyboard. The top row of keys are butted up against a lip... it's just ridiculous. The keys are sticky too and hard to press. Even the dated TREO is faster. And the pull out that I thought would be so cool ended up being quite cumbersome. The phone does a LOT of things well and has a whole lot of potential, but hell, if you can't physically use the thing?
So I get an iPhone 3GS and am currently on a 30 day trial. SURPRISE! With practice, you type super fast and if you just trust the excellent automatic spell check, you don't ever have to look back. But the biggest unexpected whopper for me was this... 5 BARS! UNBELIEVABLE. I'm in Scottsdale, AZ, and I used to only get 1 stinkin bar (and barely that) on my TREO/Sprint phone when using it in the house. Now with my iPhone/AT&T I get 5 bars! (I thought AT&T coverage was suppose to be so lousy?) I can finally talk at home without embarrassingly having to call the person back on my landline after the call dropped.
Between Sprints terrible reception (in this area) and the Pre's impossible to use phone... I would be better off writting letters. Both companies have the right idea. Sprint with its pricing plan, and the Palm Pre with its phones functions. But I can't use either one?
Any other 180's with expectations out there? Good or bad.
