Strange Dock Behavior

Am on Mountain Lion (10.8.2) and my Dock has suddenly started acting strangely. I have it set to auto hide, but it no longer slides up when I put my mouse on the bottom of the screen. If I click at the bottom it appears. I have not changed my settings, what could be up?

Dock issues in Mountain Lion

I have been having issues with the Dock ever since I started in Mountain Lion. It was a clean install on a new drive. I have not been able to keep any apps in the dock other than the ones that OSX defaults. I can take them out and they stay out. But can not open an app, drag the icon in and tell it to stay in dock and have it stay. After quitting the app it goes away. Also, I can turn Dock hiding on but when I restart the next day, its off again. A lot of extra work going on here.

Aargh...

OK, so I had rebooted a number of times, with no effect on this issue... then, today when I finally put in a question, a reboot put the Dock back into normal behavior... Rats. No changes in settings, but....

Oh, well.

Sigh...

It's Baaaack.... So not sure what is causing it, but this morning when I took my MBP out of sleep mode, the strange behavior was back. And I think it may be more of a strange 'mouse' behavior, as I noticed that things do not highlight when I mouse over them. Rebooting sets it back to normal.

So, any thoughts?

I'm also experiencing dock oddities like this. My most common issue is that Mail will suddenly be gone from the dock, even while it's open. This is on a new (late 2012) iMac. Have also had other non native app icons vanish from the dock.

Is the best course of action to delete the plist?
Would be nice if Apple provided a plist repair tool so you don't have to redo all those prefs from scratch.

Like "plutil", for instance?

Yes. Utilities like Onyx also contain "plist checking" front-ends for plutil.
