Strange Emoji thing

My daughter sent me this screen shot. She's running 11.1.2 on her iPhone 7+. She was texting with her sisters in a group chat and used the female "facepalm" emoji in a text message. When she looks at that message in the Messages preview, is show the MALE "facepalm" emoji followed by the "female" symbol.

Has anyone else encountered this? I'm running 11.2 beta, so I cannot test it in her environment, and I am not seeing this on 11.2 beta 4.

I think that’s one of the new emojis. Does the recipient have 11.1.x?

I'm running 11.1.2 and don't see this behaviour, but it looks like it's messing up one of the "zero width joiners" used to create the variation of the emoji and that's why she's seeing more than one symbol.

The short version is that a lot of these emoji are defined by combining several characters together with a special joiner character to create the final emoji: https://blog.emojipedia.org/emoji-zwj-sequences-three-letters-many-possibilities/

Perhaps something odd is happening that's causing one of the joiners to be truncated or removed (maybe it's trying to fit the message in the available space and has done an incorrect character truncation) and so the emoji is being displayed as some of its constituent characters instead. Could be a bug that only triggers in very specific circumstances...
