Hi Everyone,
I'm just pulling my Mac Pro out of storage so that I can sell it, and there's a weird glitch that I don't ever remember seeing before.

First up, the display only works on DVI - neither of the 2 DP on the Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB card seem to work.
Running 10.14.6, 32GB memory, 6 core 3.33

The main glitch though is that the top of each window on the display (ie finder window or Safari window) has this weird 'tracing' whereby the mouse going over the top bar of the window, pixelates it. Here's a video of it:

Would you say the 5870 card is faulty?
I'd love to get this MP on ebay, so if anyone can give me any advice, that'd be great.

Many thanks :)

OMG!!
I updated via the regular software update menu ... never heard of it doing something like that before, how very strange!! ?
Do you happen to know if there is a way of down grading it, like via Recovery Mode? (I’m not at my desk right now, just on my iPhone)
Thanks though, that’s an eye opener!!
Cheers

You shouldn't have been able to install 10.14 without a metal capable gpu.
Your Mac would have needed a firmware update which would fail without the gpu..... ?

Are you sure it's 10.14.
Is the gpu the Apple original.

You could download and install High Sierra in order to sell it.

if you pop up a Mojave Installation in a 5.1 with APFS capable Firmware every GPU with EFI Firmware just makes a basic GUI.

So a 5870, 5770, GT120, etc etc with Bootscreen is at least good enough for some tests.

You can't really work with it. Apps like Maps would even wont display anything.

Just an update - booting into recovery allowed me to wipe the Mac HD, but then the install OS wouldn't work, so I had a non booting or restorable mac!

I created a USB bootable drive eventually (quite problematic as the other Mac I was using couldn't get past the first step of running the .pkg) on a different Mac again, and from there it was simple enough to boot from the USB and install.

Thanks so much for the help :)
