My mom has an 8 GB iPhone 3GS with a 200 MB plan from AT&T. When she got it last year she was paranoid about going over her limit so I had read about an app called iDataUsage and I had her install it to monitor her data.
Yesterday she came in and was telling me her battery seemed to be draining too quickly and that the night before she was talking on the phone and it began to get very warm. I looked at the phone and immediately noticed that the GPS arrow was constantly showing at the top of her screen. I shut down every app and did a reset and the GPS arrow was still there.
So I went into location services and began turning them off one at a time until the arrow went away. The app that was causing it was iDataUsage even though it wasn't even running!
First of all, why would a data-monitoring app need to use location and second, how could it be using the GPS when it was not running at all?
I went to the app store and I can't even find the app any more which makes me wonder if it got pulled. I deleted the app from the phone and will wait to see what happens.
I'm thinking the constant GPS usage was the likely cause of battery drain and the phone getting too warm.
Any thoughts?
