"strange" iphone icons, anyone seen this?

today out of the blue, the icons for Phone, Mail, Safari etc. changed. There is a wheel next to it that I've never seen before. I have nothing pending (no new voice mail etc.) Function wise, nothing is out of the ordinary.
I noticed on a few other apps, the wheel can also appear for a brief second right after I close it.
Pretty strange. Any idea?

Some more details:
iphone 3G 8gb, running pwn'ed 2.2.1, unlocked w/ yellowsn0w, backgrounder, boss prefs, quick gold, and a few other apps from cydia and that's about it. everything else is stock.

Wow there are a lot of threads about this lately. I answered to a similar one today. It is from the new version of backgrounder. You can disable the badges in the settings.
