I have a macbook air in my household (it is not my laptop, but i bought it for my wife) and I am having a couple of issues.

1) occasionally, hard to reproduce, it looks like some of the LEDs at the bottom of the screen are going out. they alternate in a very specific dark light pattern. This started up a couple weeks ago

2) now the keyboard has now become unusable as the number keys are permanently shifted into !@#$% instead of 12345. The keys are not sticky or anything, and there does not appear to be any liquid damage, but then again, i am not the primary user of this laptop so who really knows.

Does any of this sound like something covered under warranty? Are there any water damage indicators i can check to see if damage was caused by this?

unfortunately with the macbook air since it's not 'user-openable' it's really hard to check for water damage. But if it's not water damage then apple will cover it, if it is water damage then apple will not cover it.

Wait, you have the alternating stripes LED issue on the air? This is the first I've heard of it for the air, but it's a huge issue for many penryn MacBook Pro users.

Huh? Where's the proof of that? I work at the local Gold Apple Reseller and many Penryn MBPs have come through me - not a single one had this issue.

A rather large thread over at Apple Discussions:

So much so, that they had to lock it and start a new thread:

Our very own MacRumors story:

Also note I said it's a huge issue for many users - not meaning that there are necessarily a huge number of users affected - merely that those users that are affected (that are many, because it is not just a few), it can affect them in a huge way. I have the issue, but it's intermittent, and I think I can live with it. For others, they get it more frequently, and it could be more disruptive, and hence the huge issue.

ok, forgive me if these are stupid questions...

1) do you have the keyboard illumination set to change when the ambient light changes? I think this is like a default because the Air I just got this weekend came with it turned on... I noticed when I was sitting on one end of the couch and the lamp was on the other end and my husband sat in the middle.. When he moved, the keyboard got brighter or dimmer and I finally figured out he was blocking enough light sometimes to cause the keyboard light to change...

2) I only played with the Air a little bit this weekend but I seem to remember seeing a num lock in the function key row, is that maybe toggled on?

Again, I'm sorry if you already looked into both of these but as a new Air user too I thought I'd try to help...
