I feel a bit like an old man for getting this heavily confused, but I have the "boop" notification sound configured on my Mac under the Sound settings in System Preferences, but about 1 in every 10 times, the notification sound is a sonar-like "blip" sound that doesn't match anything under "Alert sound" dropdown menu. Some apps like Apple Weather seem to have a 100% chance of playing this noise when a forecast notification pops up. I managed to finally catch it as it was happening via a Loopback audio capture, attached below.

Does anyone recognize what the heck this could possibly be? It only started in macOS Sonoma. I'm trying to figure out if there's something I accidentally configured like an Accessibility option for extra auto prompts that are somehow overriding my default notification noise with something else. I can also try to capture a system log via the Console app if that helps.

Funny you mention that, because I was actually just discussing that here! It seems to have replaced the old default "tri-tone" sound. I've looked endlessly to find said sound, including on the internet, and I just can't—it consists of pitches D4, A4, and D5... hopefully you know what I mean. Anyway, that weird sound you're talking about seems to have replaced that old one, but only in certain cases.

I don't have any other explanation. I know this isn't a very helpful answer, but I am hearing the same sound from time to time, and others have been discussing it, too, so youre not alone.

Thanks for the reply, but no, I can't read music. As mentioned in my post, there's an included recording of the sound if you want to confirm it's the same as what you're hearing. I will cross-post it to that other thread.

You may be missing the point—that is the same sound I’m hearing. I said that purely to explain what the sound replaces.

I do encounter this notification sound from Messenger app (of Meta) and new Spark email app (the old one still have its own notification sound).
Did anyone manage to change this setting? It's sounds not comfortable
