Hi Folks!

Wanted to introduce myself and say hello to all who have taken the time to read this.

I'm also here to submit my strange issue to the forum in the hope that your collective sage wisdom might inform my course of action.

So my iPhone (original) recently began emitting red light from the proximity sensor. This light is lit anytime the screen is on. Also, the proximity sensor seems to have stopped functioning, which has dramatically affected battery life.

I have apple care, and plan to visit an apple store as soon as I return home next week; but I was just curious whether anyone had seen this before.

Pics follow

Thanks for looking and responding

Justin

Methinks HAL has taken over your iPhone.

If it starts saying it can't let you do certain things, run.

In all seriousness, I haven't seen that before. Take it back.

You have to turn the switch from Evil to Good ;)

I second bringing it back to the store

i think it just means the proximity sensor is on because when i talk on my phone i see a red dot just like that one in the same place.

I can only see the dot when its dark and im on the phone.

does the screen go off if you put something over it?

That's actually pretty cool!

Since you are still covered by AppleCare, bring it in to them and be sure to point out any other issues (dead pixels, ect.). You might even luck out and get something extra if they are unable to fix it. Don't lose any sleep over this if you are covered. But as to the problem, I have no clue whatsoever.

It is definitely emanating from the proximity sensor, but as far as I can tell the sensor is no longer functioning. The screen remains on even when I am talking on the phone. The light is clearly visible even in daylight, the only reason I took the pictures in low light is that it was difficult to photograph.

Interesting responses, I definitely will be taking it in next week and will let you all know the outcome.

DeaconGraves: Funny you should mention HAL as for awhile, while my phone was unlocked, I used HAL's "there is a message for you" line as my text alert. Ha.
