I'm not a big Numbers user, but I have been trying it out now and then, but I end up drifting back to Excel once I get stuck. I thought I'd give it another try, but I got hung up again, and thought I'd ask here before going back to Excel. I have use-case that would be best served by a spreadsheet on the ipad (7th gen, standard).

When I'm typing text into a cell, regardless of format, whenever I hit the spacebar on the apple smart keyboard, the spreadsheet closes and the screen reverts to the screen of all spreadsheets. Numbers is the only application that acts this way. I checked keyboard settings in the general settings page and looked in the settings in Numbers too, and can't find anything that would allow for this reaction. If I hold down the option key while pressing the spacebar, it acts as a spacebar should and inserts a space character.

My noob apologies in advance if this is a simple fix that I'm too dumb to find. My web searching has been equally unsuccessful.

Interesting problem! I'm unable to reproduce it on my Logitech Combo Touch keyboard on iPadOS 14.7.1. Three ideas, although it doesn't explain why it only happens in Numbers:

1. When you say you checked keyboard settings in General > Keyboards > Hardware Keyboard, did you check to see if a Modifier key was changed?

2. Check Settings >Accessibility > Keyboards > full Keyboard Access > Commands > Interaction section > Activate > remove Space.

3. Did you try Reset All Settings?

I use Numbers somewhat and am also not able to reproduce the problem. iPadPro 9.7" iOS 14.7.1 with Numbers 11.1. Mine is also the Apple Smart Keyboard.

Ah of course - “accessibility,” the catch-all for those settings that don’t really belong anywhere else.

#2 was the answer. Odd that it only had that effect in Numbers. Thanks for the fix!
