Since updating iOS on my iPhone and iPad, every time I leave the house (with my iPhone but not the iPad or my MacBook) I keep getting notifications on my phone telling me I "left behind" my devices. That's because I did, but on purpose and have never been nagged by my phone about it.

"This device was left behind. The device is no longer detected near you. It was last seen at home".

Can someone please point me in the right direction to leave the location ability of this in place, but on demand, rather than automatic? Is this something I need to change on my iPhone or iPad. Still want the ability to remote lock if stolen, but without the nagging when my devices are somewhere I know, like home.

I've been getting the same thing. Usually when I leave my APMs in the house. It gets annoying but I believe there is a feature that allows you to turn it off.

Thanks @IngoX - culprit seemed to be my iPad with "Notify when left behind" activated on my iPhone's "find my" as you suggest. Have toggled it off.

I'm mixed with that. There are times when I leave certain devices behind on purpose and times when I don't mean to leave something behind so I welcome the notification. I always think "Keys, wallet, phone, iPad" as I leave the house. I've found that works great to not leave something behind.
