Strategy for a shared family calendar

Hi!

Me and my family (4 persons) all have iPhones and therefore we have a shared iCloud calendar where we write our events. Right now we have one shared where events for everyone are. The event name is "Name: Event" but when I look at the calendar it doesn't look very clear and everything is in one color.

I thought of having four calendars in different colors, one for each person. And also one for everyone (e.g. If everyone is going to do the same thing). Then it looks better and is more clear.

So, what's the best way to do it?

One is mine -- I have the ability to read/write, she has the ability to read only.
One is hers -- I have the ability to read only, she has the ability to read/write.
One is family -- We both have the ability to read/write.

i have a similar set up as above for 5 different family calendars. only exception is that everyone has read/write capabilities.

Going off the top of my head... may not be 100% accurate or the best way to do it.

1. In the calendar app in OSX on my Mac, I created two iCloud calendars: "Me" and "Family".
2. Right click on "Me" and select "Sharing Settings".
3. Type wife's iCloud email address in box underneath "Share Me With:" and select "View Only".
4. Click Done.
5. Right click on "Family" and select "Sharing Settings".
6. Type wife's iCloud email address in box underneath "Share Family With:" and select "View & Edit"
7. Click Done.
8. Follow steps 1-4 on wife's Mac, substituting my iCloud email address where appropriate.

It only took two hours to set up, but it seems to be working now.

I hit the dreaded "Can't join shared calendar. This calendar can't be joined because it's no longer shared." error. Evidently, this error shows up for many different reasons, none of which is because the calendar is not shared.

For me, the solution was to rearrange the primary and secondary email addresses in my iCloud account.

Some day this will all "just work."
