does anyone successfully stream from an external hard drive? everything works fine except when i leave the apple tv idle for a couple minutes, then it will lose the synced content. would this have anything to do with the hard drive spinning down after a couple minutes of inactivity? if so is there any way to stop this from happening? i'm constantly having to restart itunes after a couple minutes of inactivity if nothing's playing on the apple tv.

I use an external hard drive for my itunes library and I don't have any problems. The only thing that gets me a little bit is waiting that extra bit longer when streaming from it as the hard drive has to spin up again from idle.

Is it possible to sync a NAS hard drive without have to have the computer on?

hmm i'm not sure, but does my post even make sense? is it possible that when the external goes idle and spins down, it stops updating info to the apple tv, so all synced content disappears until i go back to the computer, and restart itunes

Im guessing its not the hard drive but rather your computer that is going to sleep. Make sure that in System Preferences (assuming your on a Mac) under Energy Save (the yellow light bulb) you dont have your computer going to sleep within 1/2 an hour or so - that should help.

I have issues with my hard drive going to sleep every several days. If I turn off and on, it comes right up but I'm not sure why it happens. My setting are for the monitor to only go to sleep, hard drive is unchecked. Its a 500 Gb Iomega. Anyone else have this issue?

no i made sure that wasn't the case.. is there an option to stop an external hard drive from spinning down with inactivity?

Some hard drives will park their heads and spin down if there's been no activity over a long time. Check the mfr's website, email their tech support, read their info. Find out if it's the drive.
