First off, sorry if this has been discussed before. I searched this forum and couldn't find anything relating to this question.

Due to a lack of space in my house, I've decided to digitize all of my DVDs. I also live in a developing neighborhood where no cable or broadband internet access (other than dial-up) is available. For web surfing, I've just been using my Verizon iPhone, which is fine but the speeds are too slow to stream any lengthy videos.

I'm looking for the best way to stream my digital movies and TV shows to my television, and I've been looking at grabbing an ATV2.

Does anyone know if there is a way to stream from my iTunes to the ATV2 without an internet connection, maybe through an Ad Hoc network or something similar?

I don't know much about this or about the equipment needed, if possible. Could someone give me some advice or point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

You should be able to set up a wireless router to connect a computer to act as your itunes server, an ATV or ATV2, and an extra external HDD all on a wireless network throughout your apartment without the internet just fine. Obviously you wouldn't be able to run any of the internet necessary apps such as Netflix, but everything else should function just fine.

+1

Should be quite simple to setup, and pretty much any wireless router would suffice although i'd recommend something using 802.11N if possible (mainly for video)

I could be wrong, but I seem to recall that a connection to the internet is required for local sharing due to exclusive use of Home Sharing. I think you need to hit Apple's authentication servers to get Home Sharing set up.

You should confirm that the aTV2 will work without an internet connection before you buy.

I guess also, if you wanted to get froggy, you could use your iPhone as an internet hotspot to try to run Netflix on, From experience trying to use my flashed Droid to do this for my XBOX 360 in order to run Netflix until the service guy came to hook up internet at my place is pretty much fail. Could work in a pinch though, or just give you something to try out of boredom.

I discovered that this is the case, at least in my setup. Last night our broadband went down, and the modem stopped working. We thought it'd be no problem to still stream a movie from iTunes through the airport to the ATV2, but it did not work. It couldn't see the computer.

I actually think that's really a stupid move on the part of Apple. Why SHOULD I have to have broadband to run a simple wireless home network?

Grr.
