Streaming Music to another area of the house.

Was chatting with my cousin the otherday about computers and the usual junk you talk about when at family gathering type events -- and he asked if i had any experience with Wi-Fi. He has a PC (getting on a bit now, but when he got it i used to envy him PII 400 he has, at the time that was UBER!!) and a mp3 player of some sort (didnt say what it was) and he told me he wanted to setup Wi-Fi in the house so he could stream MP3's from his PC to other area's of the house (the bathroom mainly).

I did attempt to drop hints about Mac Mini's and the Airport Base Stations and he admited he wanted an iPod lol -- But urrm as for what he wants to do, can someone maybe explain an APPLE way to do it... from what he was saying i think he just wanted to stream music 'directly' to speakers. Is that possible?

You would need an airport express in the mix - connect the speakers to the airport express, and the airport express to a power outlet and you can stream the music from any computer running iTunes - mac or pc. It's really simple to setup and works great.

He could even get a remote (if his bathroom is close enough to the computer streaming the music) from Griffin and control iTunes via USB adapter.

I do this in my home and it works great. I can stream music to my living room or bedroom via airport express - or if I'm traveling I grab one and throw it in my bag to make sure I can work wirelessly from whatever hotel I'm at.

They are quite handy to have.

An Airport Express would definately do what he wants, but the catch is that he'd probably need a new computer. A P2-400 isn't going to be the best platform to run Win2k (or WinXP) on, and that's what you need to run iTunes for Windows.

Alternatively, there are other solutions out there for Windows PCs. Roku makes some nice stuff for streaming audio. Not sure what the PC requirements are, but Win98 is usually sufficient in the Windows world.

Good point - I didn't even think about that - partly cause I'm not used to even thinking in terms of Windows version and compatibility!

Or, if the bathroom is not close to the computer (which, really, seems like a good idea ), the Keyspan Express remote works great. Plug the receiver into the Airport Express and control the computer over the WiFi link.
