Hey everyone, would you say the MBP or MBA has better impact resistance? To keep it specific, lets say an MBP and MBA were kept on their sides in a backpack. Which would have better impact resistance?

That's hard to say because it depends on too many factors, but a heavier laptop will tend to hit the ground a little harder than a lighter one. I do know that my Speck saved my uMBP from the damage of a fall. You best bet is to get a backpack that suspends the laptop above the bottom of the bag, as opposed to one where the laptop rests on the bottom.

I voted the MBA for three reasons:

1. it's lighter
2. the edge is thinner... I know this means more force, but the thin edge is also stronger.
3. there are less parts inside to break... plus they are all neatly sandwiched in with no room to move. Having taken apart both models, the Air appears to be more impact resistant.

They would both be fairly resistant to internal damage if equipped with an SSD.

+5 lol as for the question, neither should be mis treated or dropped. If you do, steve will come after you lol

I've heard this to be true actually. If you're at work, he breaks in and messes up the place. Seriously. DON'T DROP IT. You'll regret it.

Well yeah, the Macbook Air is lighter, so it would have less momentum when falling so the overall force provided by the surface on the Air would be less.

It's thinner, but then I'd assume that it would concentrate any force on it meaning the edges would probably be more prone to dents. I think the Macbook Pro's glass screen would be more vulnerable to breaking compared to the plastic coating and aluminium on the Air.

Also, the Air has less components inside, so I'd assume they're less prone to breaking than the Pro. Both have pretty standard hinges though.

Hmm.
