Hello there

I am struggling to transfer or import pictures from my gf iPhone to her MacBook Pro. There are 7000 pictures on the iPhone but when I plug it to the Mac, it says only 3000. No idea where are the others.

I spent time with Apple hotline and they showed me how to do it: go to iCloud.com and download the pictures. But it is very tedious: transfer failed if it’s more than 100 pictures.

Anyone got a solution to transfer the pictures to a MacBook Pro? Thanks in advance!

Yes but the Photos app on Mac shows 3600 while there 7000 pictures or more on the iPhone.

Hello

Thanks for your message and apologies for the delay. It was now 11,000 pictures for 54 GB.

Indeed, I had to select “Download and keep originals”. It took several days and got stuck several time. After restarting the phone, updated it, I managed to get all the photos.

Then I transferred all of the 11,000 pictures to the MacBook Pro by using USB-C. It took just a few minutes. I used ImageCapture, more easy than the Photo App.

I started deleting the pictures on the iPhone and now only 1,842 remains for 17 GB. Might be the GoPro videos in the Maldives, I’ll see tomorrow if I delete them.

Meanwhile 5000 pictures reappeared so I deleted them again.

Also be careful if you do download photos direct from the iCloud website they aren’t full resolution for some reason.

I was not aware of that. How comes?
No idea, I just noticed it when I was re downloading raw photos it was downloading them as JPEG. It would only download them as raw within the app itself.

I still use apple photos but I also keep a copy of all photos in finder just to be safe and then backed up to an external drive

Interesting. I haven’t noticed it, I just dumped the pictures in a folder.

For mine, I do the same as you. But now I won’t use the Photo app anymore. Just ImageCapture. I have a feeling it keeps the integrity of a picture.

Photo app is horrible.

Yeah I’ve thought about not using it but I like how it does the memories that pop up on my phone, also it’s good for syncing to the photos app on the Apple TV which we often use for watching back home videos on from vacations etc.

Although AirPlay is pretty good these days so might be worth trying that

I also do the Apple TV thing, on my 65" OLED Panasonic it’s absolutely breathtaking!

But sometimes the videos doesn’t load even with optic fiber. And I have some stutter.

I wish there was a way to download locally videos & pictures on the Apple TV.

That’s on my wish list! Remember the original Apple TV you could sync videos to it and not have to worry about streaming!

Maybe one day eh!

Three options:
1. Set iPhone to download & keep originals - Settings > Name > iCloud > Photos > Download & Keep Originals
Benefit: Photos are resident on iPhone, so can be transferred via USB to computer. Still backed up on iCloud, so can be seen on iPad or if phone is lost, photos are safe.
Drawback: You'll need enough free storage on the phone to hold all your photos

2. Turn off iCloud Photos - Settings > Name > iCloud > Photos > Sync This iPhone off
Benefit: Photos are resident on iPhone, so can be transferred via USB to computer. May be able to downgrade your iCloud storage & save some money.
Drawback: You'll need enough free storage on the phone to hold all your photos. Your photos aren't backed up so if you lose/damage the phone you only have what's already been transferred to the computer.

3. Set the computer to sync your photos from iCloud - Photos menu > Settings > iCloud Photos on
Benefit: Pretty much automatic. When you take photos on the phone, they will show up on the computer. Very efficient use of phone internal storage.
Drawback: You need to do things the Apple way, not your way
