STUBBORN FOLDERS

i have two folders which seem to have appeared from my yahoo e-mail after i downloaded some photos on my desktop.I have opened them and they have nothing of importance in,of this i am sure.however when i go to delete them a small window appears saying that the folders are in use by another task and try to delete them later.
The same happens when i try to move them..
Any ideas as to what they are and how to get them of my desktop.
any help would be appreciated

this actually happened to me yesterday. For some reason I was able to delete them after I restarted my computer. I don't know what cause this but that is how I solved my problem.
 
#1. Go to applications/utilities/netinfo manager.

#2. under the security menu at the top scroll down to "enable root user". You may have to hit authenticate first though and put in your adminstrator password.

#3. make a very impossible password for others to figure out but easy enough for you to remember. When you are in root user mode you can delete anything you want which makes it VERY possible to delete something that the systme need to run.

#4. go to system prefs and open accounts. go to login options and make it Display Login Window as: Name and password and make sure Automatically log in is not checked.

#5. Now restart and type in root for the user name and the password you made up.

#6. Once logged in make sure to delete what you need to and log out quickly(as not to mistakenly mess anything up).

#7. Log back in as yourself and go back to the netinfo manager and Disable root use the same way you enabled it. if you leave this option on then anyone that nows your password could ultimately screw things up.

any more questions just ask.

p.s. - there is a way to do this from the terminal but I am not comfortable with it so I don't even want to try.
 
after recreating the steps as to make sure you didn't do anything wrong I came up with something to make this easier. I can not believe I told you the long way. I suck!!

Instead of changing your login options and restarting just log out via the apple menu to save time. This will push you to have to enter a user and then just type root. do the reverse to get back to your normal login.
 
I did what you said and went into root and found the folders but the same thing happened when i tried to delete them.
whats going on....
by the way do you know anything about itunes and if so why a cd wouldn't finalize even though it burned

hmmm...Now i am confused. The only other thing I can think of is going to versiontracker and downloading a program called cocktail. It is freeware and it is an amazing utility. You can change all kinds of stuff, repair permissions, delete caches, delete locked files, etc. from cocktail. In this program you should try going to the files! tag (not the file menu at the top of the screen but the one in the application) and choose which files you want to delete. I think this should do the trick...I hope. If it doesn't work, at least this is a do all utility that is valuable to have anyway.

Sorry about the iTunes thing...I always burn using Toast.
 
I just came up with two other things to try.

#1. If you have a dual boot machine then boot into OS9 and delete from there.

#2. create a folder elsewhere on your drive with the EXACT same name. Try to move it to where the stuborn folder is and when it asks you if you want to overwrite it say yes. If thhat works then delete it.
 
another suggestion
open terminal..it would be in applications..
you would get a prompt..write 'sudo rm ' dont put the ', and dont forget to put a space after rm. drag the folders to the line..press enter..it would ask for your password..it should do it..
 
you're a star the putting the foder with the same name worked fine thanks alot.
Maybe one day if you need any help(in the future when i've learnt how to use this computer)i'll be glad to help.
what software do you use to burn dvds

I use Toast for all by brning desires. hehe. Even when I work with DVD studio Pro I build the disc and burn it in toast.
