i connected my iphone to the computer and upgraded it to 2.2.1 and suddenly it switched off. i switched it back on and it didn't recognize my device anymore and said 'iPhone' is in restoration mode and needs to be restored. at that time i was wondering what was going on with my iphone so i said okay and clicked restore and it says a unknown error has occured (13) and i researched this and it told me to put my device in DFU mode so i did that and the only thing my iphone now does is show the itunes and connecter or just the apple logo Sad someone help?

i never did anything to it... i never unlocked it or jailbreaked it

is the 3g or 1st gen? If you bought it from an official reseller, then connect to itunes and activate it. If you bought it from someone else chances are it was already unlocked or jail broken.

Quick solution: Enter Recovery mode, not to be confused with DFU mode:

Recovery Mode:
1) Turn iPhone off by holding down the Sleep/Wake Button for about 5 seconds or until the Slide to Power Off slider appears.
2) Slide Power Off slider. If iPhone is unresponsive, do a Hard Reset until the logo and screen go black.
3) Open iTunes on your computer (Mac or PC).
4) Hold the Home Button down while you connect your iPhone to your computer via a USB cable.
5) iTunes should prompt you with a message saying an iPhone has been detected in Recovery Mode and that you must Restore it to before it can be used with iTunes.
6) Click Ok.
7) Click Restore a message should appear confirming that you want to Restore and Update.
8) Click Restore and Update. The restore has been initiated. Leave your iPhone connected until you iPhone reboots and syncs with iTunes.

If this doesn't work then plug the iPhone into your computer and run Pwnage Tool or QuickPwn. I have found that these applications will recognize an iPhone in Recovery Mode better than iTunes and iTunes can then recognize it.

i bought it from the official seller: carphone warehouse (UK) and it is on o2. it hasn't been jailbroken or unlocked and i tried your method it isn't working

call apple support and/or try their troubleshooting tips on their site. If it still doesn't work then they will have to replace it for you.
