My dual 3.46ghz MP 5,1 (genuine 5,1) running 12.2 Monterey with Martin Lo’s 0.7.9 package as of yesterday morning did a crash on start up with the black screen message in multiple languages. (Kernel panic?)

I thought nothing of it and the computer restarted normally and I used it normally with no hint of problems, then shut it down end of day. Nothing unusual.

Today it won’t go at all - it chimes, gets to the boot picker screen but won’t go further. It also refuses to go into recovery mode, that loops as well.

I put in another SSD and can get Big Sur recovery mode (11.2.3), but obviously I don’t want to go that route.

Any thoughts on recovering this?

Could I do a complete reinstall using 12.2 installer on a USB with Martin lo’s 0.7.9 package unmodified?

Edit: I’ve got it going with my old Mojave HDD, so it doesn’t seem to be a computer failure.

i have got it to start in Mojave, but it gave me this kernel panic above.

CPU 3: NMI.

I took the CPU tray out and checked north bridge heatsink clips, everything is solid and the NB temps were below 60°C (I have an extra fan to cool it). I also put new thermal compound on the northbridge not so long ago, the clips are new.

CPU temps were all low as well - 35-40°C.

Sounds something like this: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000007289/server-products.html. Maybe the PDF on the linked page will offer some clues.

Perhaps later versions of macOS are stricter with timings, or just have a different boot sequence that triggers the issue sooner.

Edit: Ignore this. The article relates to an older Xeon family, and is probably not relevant.
I ended up finding some other people with similar errors on the 6,1 Mac Pro - seems to be a CPU related issue so I've taken a chance and ordered a pair of X5690s since they are very cheap and will have a go at replacing the CPUs. I still have my new 7,1 on order now so if the 5,1 comes good again even better.

I just need to know which CPU in the machine is the problem one, CPU 3 and CPU9 - would that be CPU A?

Code:
mp_kdp_enter() timed-out on cpu 9, NMI-ing

I’m sorry to hear about your boot loop problem. A year ago I had a similar symptom where my 5,1 Mac Pro went into a repeated boot loop with Catalina in Open core. The problem started when I installed third-party software that may have caused the boot loop. By habit, luckily I keep a cloned copy of my main drive and this helped fix the issue. I re-cloned the healthy Catalina drive to my main drive with the boot loop problem. Then I re-blessed the re-cloned drive and everything was working fine. I’m using Martin Lo’s Open core.

I hope that your problem turns out to be just a minor OS getting corrupted and not a CPU problem.

Post about cloning Open core

I replaced CPU A with another X5690 Xeon that I purchased.

I put the old HDD in and on Mojave it started up again - though it was only showing 112GB RAM instead of 128GB.

I've just shut it down again and will power it up and see if we have success again. Fingers crossed!

Edit: Second boot up, RAM slot #5 is showing as empty. But she started again.

Okay it appears to be working.

I'm now trying to get Monterey installed on it from a USB that I've used before.

I got Martin Lo's 0.8.0 package that I've taken from my other 5,1 Mac Pro (which has working Monterey) - and I've change the following: https://www.youtube.com /watch?v=ULXchb5KKqE (remove the space).

Regardless of what I try, I get a forbidden symbol when doing the first reboot, where am I going wrong?

Config.plist is attached if someone can find what setting is causing it to give the forbidden symbol. This config will let me upgrade my other nearly identical 6 core Mac Pro to newer Monterey versions without problem.

I know why I love the 6,1 and 7,1 so much, it's just easier.

Edit: 3 - it seems to be working now - monterey installer is running without forbidden symbol.

Edit 4: It's working again. CMD+OPT+P+R got it to go eventually. Now I'm in 12.2 monterey and I'm going to put 12.6.1. I have 0.8.6 Martin Lo package going and my old backup Mojave HDD is out of the computer. So it appears the old machine lives again, so far at least. :)

Final reply I hope: I have 12.6.1 Monterey installed along with Martin Lo’s 0.8.0 package that was taken off my other 5,1.

I still had random forbidden symbols appearing on some starts, but on a hunch I disable the surplus settings in config.plist and now it seems to be working without issues. I have done multiple boots to test that.

I ran the computer with Ful Gaz and Zwift and both seem to be fine. It’s sitting in my indoor cycling pain cave running the whole setup. It’s doing what the other 6 core 5,1 was doing, only difference this one has working Bluetooth antenna.

So the problem causing the kernel panics seemed to be the CPU A having a fault.
